| Common Alloy Series & Tempers | 1xxx Series (e.g., 1060, 1100): ≥99% pure aluminum. Excellent corrosion resistance, thermal/electrical conductivity, and workability. 5xxx Series (e.g., 5083, 5086, 5454): Magnesium alloyed. High strength, superb marine corrosion resistance, and excellent weldability. Standard for marine and structural applications. 6xxx Series (e.g., 6061, 6082): Magnesium-silicon alloyed. Heat-treatable, good strength, machinability, and anodizing response. Most versatile structural alloy. 2xxx Series (e.g., 2024, 2219): Copper alloyed. Very high strength (aerospace-grade), lower corrosion resistance, often clad. |
| Standard Tempers | O (Annealed): Softest temper for maximum formability. H112 (As-Fabricated): Typical for hot-rolled or extruded plate with no specific strain-hardening control. T6 (Solution Heat-Treated & Artificially Aged): Peak strength condition for 6xxx series. Most common for structural plate. T651/T6511 (Stress-Relieved Stretched): T6 temper plus stress-relieving via stretching for improved dimensional stability during machining. T74/T7351 (Overaged): For 7xxx series (e.g., 7075) to improve stress corrosion cracking resistance. |

| Surface Finish & Condition | Mill Finish (MF): As-rolled or heat-treated surface, may have visible mill marks. Hot Rolled Finish: Scaled or oxidized surface from hot rolling. Machined (Sawn, Milled, Blanchard Ground): Precision surfaces for tooling plate or finished components. Anodized (Coated): Clear or colored anodic coating for corrosion/wear resistance. Alclad: Surface layer of pure aluminum or alloy for superior corrosion protection (common on aerospace alloys like 2024, 7075). |
| Fabrication Properties | Machinability: Good (6xxx series) to Excellent (free-cutting alloys like 2011). Weldability: Excellent for 5xxx & 6xxx series; 2xxx & 7xxx series require special techniques. Formability: Good in O and annealed tempers. Corrosion Resistance: Excellent for 1xxx, 5xxx, and 6xxx series; good for clad aerospace alloys. |
| Primary Applications | Aerospace & Defense: Aircraft structural components, missile bodies, armor plate. Marine: Ship hulls, superstructures, decks, pressure vessels. Transportation: Truck beds, railcar sides, military vehicle armor. Structural/Machining: Base plates, machine frames, molds, tooling plates, robotics. Pressure Vessels & Tanks: Cryogenic tanks, chemical storage, heat exchangers. |
