| Specification | Details |
| Common Grades & Standards | ASTM A242 / A588 Grade A, B, C, K: Standard weathering steel grades with varying strength levels and compositions for structural use. ASTM A606 Type 4 / A871-65: High-strength, low-alloy (HSLA) hot/cold-rolled sheet and plate with improved atmospheric corrosion resistance. EN 10025-5 (S355J0W/J2W, S355K0W/K2W): European grades; J0/J2 for impact at 0°C, K0/K2 for impact at -20°C. Corten A / Corten B: Popular trade names for weathering steel, often corresponding to ASTM A242 and A588 respectively. JIS G3125 SPA-H / G3114 SMA: Japanese standards for welded structures and bridges. |
| Key Alloying Elements & Mechanism | Copper (Cu): 0.25-0.55% - Primary element for forming protective patina. Chromium (Cr): 0.30-1.25% - Enhances corrosion resistance and patina adhesion. Nickel (Ni): 0.02-0.65% - Improves toughness and corrosion resistance. Phosphorus (P): ≤0.04% - Accelerates patina formation. Mechanism: Forms a dense, adherent rust layer (patina) that inhibits further corrosion when exposed to wet/dry cycles. |
| Thickness Range | Sheet: ≤ 4.76 mm (0.1875 in) Plate: > 4.76 mm (0.1875 in) up to 150 mm (6 in) Standard Stock Range: 6 mm (0.236 in) to 100 mm (4 in) |
| Standard Size Range | Width: 1000 mm (39 in) to 3000 mm (118 in) Length: 2000 mm (79 in) to 12000 mm (472 in) Standard Plate Sizes: 1524 mm x 3048 mm (60 in x 120 in), 2000 mm x 6000 mm (79 in x 236 in) |
| Mechanical Properties (ASTM A588 Grade A Typical) | Yield Strength (min): 345 MPa (50 ksi) for thickness ≤ 100 mm. Tensile Strength: 485 MPa (70 ksi) min. Elongation (min): 18% in 200 mm, 21% in 50 mm gauge length. Impact Toughness (Charpy V-notch): 20 J (15 ft-lb) min at -18°C (0°F). |
| Corrosion Resistance Performance | Atmospheric Corrosion Rate: Typically 4-6 times slower than carbon steel (A36) in rural/urban atmospheres. Patina Formation: Starts within 6-18 months; final stable color (rusty brown to dark purple) develops in 3-5 years. Unpainted Service Life: Can be used bare in most outdoor atmospheres without significant loss of cross-section. Not Recommended For: Continuous immersion, severe marine splash zones, or highly polluted industrial atmospheres without protection. |
| Available Conditions & Processing | As-Rolled (Hot Rolled): With initial mill scale. Pickled & Oiled: Scale removed for immediate patina initiation or painting. Pre-Weathered/Patinated: Artificially aged to achieve instant uniform patina appearance. Shot Blasted: Clean surface for immediate painting or accelerated natural weathering. |
| Fabrication Properties | Weldability: Good, similar to HSLA steels. Requires compatible weathering electrodes (e.g., AWS E7018-W1). Machinability: Fair to Good (approximately 70% of A36 steel). Formability: Similar to equivalent strength carbon steel. Cutting: Flame, plasma, laser, and waterjet cutting are all suitable. |
| Design & Application Considerations | Drainage: Must be designed to avoid water/sediment trapping. Contact with Non-Weathering Materials: Prevent electrolytic corrosion by isolating from dissimilar metals. Staining: Initial runoff may stain adjacent materials; requires proper detailing. Maintenance: Essentially maintenance-free when used bare; occasional inspection recommended. |
| Primary Applications | Architecture & Sculpture: Building facades, roofing, ornamental sculptures (notable use: The Angel of the North). Bridges & Infrastructure: Exposed structural elements, bridge girders, guardrails, light poles. Transportation: Railcar bodies, shipping containers, truck trailers. Utilities & Industrial: Transmission towers, utility structures, exhaust stacks, outdoor storage tanks. |
